The daily News. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1901. INCREASED TRAVELLING FACILITIES.

Although we have always contended that steamer connection was notessen--1 tial to the running of a daily mail train i between New Plymouth and Wellington, evtryone will recognise the value ■ of such a service. The daily arrival and departure of steamers from and for , Auckland must mean increased trade I for the port, and by encouraging people to. travel it must prove beneficial to the ' district generally, A daily service will also enable the New Plymouth route to hold its own with any other line of communication between Auckland and ' Wellington. As one of the most important commercial centres, the port of call for the 'Frifco mail serviee—and the depot for the great Island trade which must follow the annexation of the Islands—Auckland must always hold an important position, and the need of rapid communication between Auckland and Wellington, the capital of the colony and the seat oF government, will become increisingly necessary, That this is recognised in Auckland is evident by the fact that the New Zealand Eerald states that the shipping companies are moving in the matter of a conn'cting steamer. Our con temporary says : —" It has already been intimated that on and after November Ist a daily train will be run between Wellington and New Plymouth, and New Plymouth and Wellington. It is obvious that tbis great improvement will be of little interest or benefit to us unless provision is made for a corresponding connection between New Plymouth and the Manukau, and we understand that the two shipping companies interested are considering how they can keep a steamer connection with each train. Indeed, wo should soppose that snch a connection is an pait of the scheme, and that the train service is notJibely to be remunerative unless there is connection at N?w Plymouth. Mr Hanson the m»n ger of the Northern Steamship Company, leaves for Wellington in a few days to consult with" the authorities of the Onion Company as to the necessary t measures, aud it is almost ce ta'n that an arrangement will be come to which will subsist, at all eventp, dar'ng the ensning summer. The train wili leave Wellington at twenty five mioutea past seven a.m., > ay, on Monday, r*aching New Plymouth at a quarter past eight ' p.m. The steamer will leave at halfpast eiiiht, reaching the Manukaa early on Tuesday mornins, giving a com- , taunication with Wellington of 26 ■ hours. The return train will leave New Plymouth at twenty five minute? past seven a.m.. having conaectfd with - the boat from Mancknu, and will arrive in We'liogton at a quarter-past eight p.m. When the arrangameDt is completed, a steim-r will reach the Maoukau with a Wellington a>d Ta-a-naki mail i vary day, except Saturday The currying out of this rpi vica wil' greatly facilitate po t»l communicator botween Auckland and Tur'nHki and ! Wellington, and we have little cioobt } hut that after a trial it will be maiu- '. tained throughout the year," We do j cot know wlnt our contemporary ) means by a'steamer w 11 ie ch the Mannkitn every <lny 'Xi,ej.-t3;»turr(ay ;" because it would be a siikms blunder to cut out the Frid-,y night steamer, which enables leop'e to set Sutu day in Auckland, and return on Sunday or Monday. Probably Saturday was 'written in error for Monday, became

that will te the oolj day go nteaosor will arrive at Manufcau, if ttfuum connect with all the through trains,
