THEATRE ROYAL.

THE JOHN F. SHERIDAN COMPANY. " When the Lamps ave Lighted," in which Mr. John F. Sheridan makes his first appearance in New Plymouth at the Theatre Royal on Saturday evening, is described as "an appropriately titled play." The Daily Telegraph, speaking of the original production, said: "But such a play as ''When the Lamps are Lighted' is enough to make those melodramatic worthies (writers of otherday dramas) turn in . their graves and envy the success and daring of their clever descendants,. To combine the savagery and excitement of ' The Escaped from Portland' (Le Mange"ur de Far), a drama done to death, at the Eist End, with a modern ' The Critic,' a la Sheridan, is a thing that the dramatists of old could not abcomplisH; and yet Mr. 6. W, R. Sims, find his companion have done it. The riot and revel of dfcama are there, and they do it with a will; but our authors bava, in one sense, given us what the stage has, long wan'ed - a modern critic, Sheridao, with the aid of Puff, Dangl®, and Go.,' chaffed historical drama; Sims, with undoubted humour, takes the rehearsal of a modern play, and, thanks to the rare art and experience of Mr. Sheridan and his clever company, makes the house peal with laughter, and laughter honestly earned. During the season here, Mr, Sheridan will also pres The Bristol," and " A Trip to Chicago." The box plan is open at McKinnon Bain's.
