* YEAR'S EXPENDITURE OF THB PATRIOTIC FUND. A Blue Book has been issued, giving the income and expenditure in 1900 of special funds in connection with the Patriotic Fund. The statement of the income and expenditure has been made in order to re fute misconception of the methods of administration. While tho income during 1900 from capital invested amounted to .£13,051 9s sd, the expenditure during the same period was £26,094 lis 9d, or nearly double the income arising from investments. Consequently, to the extent of about .£13,000 has been used to make up the required payments. During the year there were placed on the Soldiers' Effects Fund 228 widows and 417 orphans of soldiers : dying while serving with the colours at home and abroad and elsewhere than in South Africa. The expenditure involved in relitving cases during 1900 raised the annual total from £2185 18s 7d for 1899 to £5142 12s 2d for the year 1900. In connection with the Transvaal War Fund raised at the Mansion House, the Commissioners muchregrot to have to record that the casualties! among our gallant troops resulted in a long roll of widows and other dependents as applicants for assistance from the fund. The year began with a roll of eighty four widows, and ended with no fewer] than 2392 widows, with their children,' in addition to 1500 other dependents registered as applicants for relief.
