STRATFORD NOTES'

♦< ■ I (From Our Own Correspondent), Much sympathy was felt for A'f Biyly in his recent accident. It was indeed hard 1 ines that, after playing for twenty-four years without an accident, he should have been so badly " laid out". in what he intended to ba his last match. The wind here has been of almost hurricane force for the last few days. It has left visible signs of its power in ftie number of uprooted tree?, and in the faofe that two sbop verandahs m Broadway were blown bxlily down. The question of compensation to landowners along the line < f the Toko railway is getting acute. Mr. Malone, on behalf of the greit body of the the settlers affected, journeyed to Wellington lately and had several hmg interviews with the Minis'ei'for Public Works and departmental officars. The result of the interviews has not transpired, but it is believed that the utmost the department offers is below what the settlers claim, and that the matter will have to go before the Compensation Court. Large improvements are to be made in the hotel accommodation of the town. The Stratford and the Empire Hotels are to be rebuilt forthwith, and considerable additions are shortly to be made to the Club Hotel. The Commercial is to be also beautified with the addition of a balcony. After many days of weary waiting, the East-road metalling contrnot is now completed, and the road is passable.
