SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The Town School Committee met on Monday evening, Present; Messrs. Collis (chairman), Hooker, Bellringer, Murray, T. and P. White. The Education Board wrote in reference to the enlargement of Courtenaystreet rchool. The matter had been, referred to a committee to inquire and report upon,

Mr. R. Todd wrote resigning his seat on tbe committee.

Tbe Board wrote approving the action of the committee in closing thd Central School on account of the influenza epidemic.

Mr. Gaukrodg- r forwarded an apology for absence through illness. The headmaster's monthly report stated that the average attendance bad been 445.3, out of 573 on the roll. When th-< school was closed fnr a woelt there were five ttachets and 280 children absen*. The attendance on 16th was 453, and all teachers were present except Mr. Johnson, who is in Wellington, and Miss fiicheno, who is still unable to resume hur duty through sickness. ,

Mr. Hooker was appointed to the visiting committee, vice Mr, Todd, resigned.

The committee considered tbe question of filling the vacancy caused by Mr. Todd's retirement. Finally Mr. Bellringer moved, and Mr. P. A hite seconded, that Mr. E. G. Allsworth be elected to the vacancy, providing be is willing to accept, and the resolution j was carried.

The Chairman brought up the matter of a district high school, and in view of the faot that tbe subject had been lyiDg in abeyance for fome time, it was resolved to write to tbe Eduction Department forwarding a'l particulars. A lengthy discussion eosued on the subject of dispensing with the s«rv'ces of the caret .kers. Eventually it was decided to allow the resolution passed at last meeting, notifying caretakers that their services would not be required after 30th September, to b* carried out. The Board will be notified of the fact at ones, ard also that the committe will hand ov«r the management of the schools to the Board under Clause 62 of its own regulations. The Inspector's report on his inspection of the West Infunts School was read. It was resalved that in the opinion of the commits ', from their personal knowledge of the good work done at the school, and the confidenca reposed in Mrs. Dowling and her staff, by the parents of childien attending, i' is to be regretted th'it more prominencr was not given to (he fact in tbe Inspector's report of 22nd A ugust. It was resolved to notify thi Board that after date the c mmittfe, not having funds, hold tbe Bo±rd responsible for all minor repaiis, and also the nightsoil contractor*.' work as from 30th September.

The Health Officer's attention is to be drawn to tbe overcrowded state of the South-road School, if the recommendations of the committee and the Inspector's report havo not been acted upon by the Board. Aceonnts were pissed, arid the committee adjourned.
