The Daily News. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1901. AN URGENT WORK.
Councillor called attention at the last meeting of thei Borough Council to a matterof vory great urgency. We refer to the erosion of the cliff, along the. sea face, between the railway reclamation and the eastern boundary of the Borough of New Plymouth. This matter has been continually referred to in these columos, and no one who will take the trouble to visit the spot will deny the great amount of damage being done. Whether the railway reclamation has had an injurious effect we are not possessed of the requisite knowledge to say, but it does appear to us that the cliff between Gover and Eliot-streets is crumbling away much faster than before the railway work was started. During the past six months the cliff just east of Cover-street has fallen io atr a really alarming rate, and will soon begin to encroach on private property. It appears to us that the matter might fairly be discussed at the Meeting to be held to-night to discuss the question of the deviation of the railway line. Indeed it is really part of the game question. The first thing to ascertaiu is if the work now being done is having an the duty of 'the Railway Department to take steps to prevent any further damage. Should this not be the case, the cost of affording adequate protection should be ascertained, and. if possible, an arrangement should be made with the Railway Department to carry out the worthwhile the men and the necessary plant Bre on the ground. As we understand the matter, if the protective wall being put down by tne department, which runs nearly to Gover-Btreet,' was cirried on to a point, somewhere about Eliot-street, the whole of the frontage would be safe. It appears to us that every effort should be made to get the Railway Department ui keep the line along the cliffs to the Henui. This would give a perfectly level line, permanently protect the sea frontage, and avoid nearly all claims for compensation. If & deputation is appointed to wait upon S'r Joseph Ward, the Minister fof ways, on che question of the deviation of the line, this equally important matter should also be brought under his notice, and every effort made to get his assistance in protecting the town against "the serious loss which threatens to overtake it.
