BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough j Council was held on Monday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. E. Ddckrill), Ore. Clow, Leaked, Brooking, Collis, Tiscb, Stohr, Carter. The comm'ttee resolved .-—That in consequence of Mr, Hughes' right of way having been laid out and in use prior to the passing of the resolution of the Council of June 13tb, 1898, his application for approval of the same be recommended to the favourable consideration of the Council; that Messrs. MacDiarmid and others be informed that their application re Lemon-street will be borne iu mind when the new lean proposals are considered and that 1 all dangerous places will be attended to at once ; that Mr. Horrocks 1 application be left to the chairman to deal with; that Mr. Pauley's application for employment be referred to the foreman; that Mr, Atkinson's application r& Gil-bert-street be left to the chairman to deal with; that the plans of Mr. Honnor's new workshop be approved subject to the borough regulations being | complied with ; that Mr. Webber's letter be acknowledged; that Messrs. Kyngdon and Bsrridge be given notic to recommence work at Gover-etreet on Wednesday morning, 28th inst ; tbat Mr. Brooking's application for permission to extend the present verandah and balcony of the Red House Hotel to the full ex r ent of the Gover-street frontage ba acceded to; that the kerbiog in Gover-street; be extended to the full depth of the Red House Hotel; that the turncock's for 'eave for one week be granted provided Mr. J. Smith carries on the work] during his absence; that Mr. Bremei be informed that the horso offered by him is t'io expensive for the work required ; that the committee regret that they are unable to accede to the petition by Messrs. E. F. Brittiin and others, to 'provide access to the beach from Hobson-street and tbat the petitioners be informed that the sections referred to in thepetition, as belonging to the borough, are private property; that Mr. Sfcnihy Smith be informed that the p'ans of tbe Uenui bridge aw not yet com pie e and that until they are the borough wiil ba unnble to give hitn the levels asked for; t hat Young-, street be formed to its highest level beyond Weymouth-street, and if poasib'e metalled ; that Mr. R. C. Collis's motion, rescinding a lecornmendation tnado last meeting refusing Mr. Hughes a certain right-of-wiy applied for. Tho Town H»U Committee recommended tbat the application of the Women's Christian Tempera- ce Union to superintend the hdios room for a poirod of twelve months be granted on the same conditions ai before.— Adopted. The Fire Prevention Committee met < on 9th September, and reported : That Mr. Riynes ba called upon to comply < with the requirements of the Inspector of Buildings with reference to tho Im- ' pevial Hotel. Plans of the Terminus and Imperial Hotels and Honnor's buildings were submitted to the Council, and paved. Cr. Stohr referred to the need for | '* dead ends " in tbe reticulation being (lushed.
