The Chairman said the main question for the chamber to consider that even'ng w*s the question of railway deviation. The growth of the town and traffic then in waa such that it wss now wyntly necessary for tbe protection of life and property that the railway should net crosn the main street. Wheie life was at stake money should he no object, and ns tbe Government had a scheme for taking tbe railway along the beach, so as to cross tbe road at the Henui, i* was very desirable and necessary that tbis diversion should take place as speedily as possible. Mr J. 0. George moved that the chairman of this chamber be a deputation to wait on the Minister for Bailways to lay before him the urgent iieucsiity for completing and bringing into u>e the new railway line of exit from New Plymouth with a view to preventing the undue risk of loss of valuable lives, which the numerous present level crossings over busy thoroughfares necossaiily entails. He thought it w>>B desirable that some oue from New Plymouth shouU wait on the Minister ami General Manager fc.:i iuaprers 011 them the urgency of the deviation. Mr King seconded pro forma. He considered, however, that action "nianatirg from the Borough would hav« more weight, et-peciiliy if strengthened by a direct resolution of tlio Chamber to the Minister. the Chamber would be the resentatives. Mr Webster advocated the Chamber appointing a deputation to wait OB th» Borough Council that evening. The motion was carried. Mr Webster moved that a oopy of the precediog resolution be forwarded to the Minister, with a request that the Council co-operate with this Chamber in sending a deputation to Wellington, and further, that a publio meeting be convened as speedily as paesible to give additional weight to tin «aovement. 1 The motion was carried.
