The mail conch from Whitec'iffs (in the centra of the opal mining distnc') to Wilcannia was making a n'ght jouroey, and drew up at a gi*e. A passenger named Ranter jumped down and opened it, when a masked robber stepped out and fired a revolver, woundin? Ilinter in the forearm. He then ordered the driver and | three n'lnr passengers to stand aeainst a fence whilst he secured the mail toss. He warned the drivr if he attempted to return to Whiter lifTs, he would be. shot. The bays contained a quantity' of valuables, including packages of; opals. In his hurry the iobbnr over-1 looked several valuable parcels of opals) in the boot of the coach. The police have many openod letters, a! tiumber of crossed cheques, and marks | of a bicycle in the viciui'y of the robbery. Received 3, 0..S a.m. SyDSEY, September 2. The robber made the driver hand over a knife which he us?d for opening l le'terp, pocketing notes and o' her valu-; ables promiscuously, and occupying] over an hour, durin<! which timo a cyclist rode up. The robber made hitn s'and witit the others till he bad finished ; then ho placed tbe loot in a mail bag, and rode away on the bicycle.
