BAND CONTEST, 1902.

PUBLIC MEETING. Thk public meeting convened by the Mayor for Monday evening was very well attended, about 35 persons, representative of all sections of the business community, and including several bandsmen, being present;. The Mayor (Mr. Djckrill) briefly explained that aa the next band contest under the auspices of the North Island Brass Band Association of New Zealand, would be held at New Plymoufh, it was necessary that the people of the town should lose do time in taking steps to forward all arrangements in connection wi'h tho con tout. Whuti the (then) City Band approached the Association with a view to getting the contest held here, it had tbe assurance of a large number of people that eve-y assistance would be given in making the affair a success. The Mayor the" went on to speak of the benefits i hat would follow the cont(st, the study of music in the town and district. He apologised for the absence of Messrs W. J. Shaw, C. E. Bellringer, and E. Nelson Okey, the latter of whom intima'ed his willingness to assi-t in every way passible.

RevertiDg to the financial aspect of the contest the Mayor quoted figures from the statement of what was done at Wanganui Jast yew, when the towDspaople raised a large amount to guarantee the cost of the contes f . The rectip's considerably exceeded the expenditure. Mr. Whi'aker thought that some of those who had had the matter in hand for some time should indicate how the project might best be taken in hand. Committees would no doubt be required, and the sooner these were elected the better.

Mr. I'. Newall explained the method adopted at Wanganui. A large committer was elected, which appointed an executive to carry out the management. As to priz's, the committee gave three or four, for the big everts, various music films atd others giving further prize'. He then read the circular issued by the \Vai;g inui committee.

Mr, D. McKinnon Bain moved that the following gentlemen be elected as a working committee, with power to add jto their number : -The Mayor, Revs. Evans, Serpell, Osborne, Messrs. W, J. Shaw, E. N. Okey, A. E Fletcher, Cock, J. Hooker, O'Lsary, Coker, Allsworth, White, Carter, Whitaker, Ambury, Tiscb, Coleman, Mills, J. O. •Morey, D. McKinnon Bain, J, N. Kingi-ley, Weston, Jus. Paul, Mr. Carter thought there wera a number of people who-e names had not been included who would be willing to join in the p-oposal. The committee should be as largely representative as possible, as graat advantages must accrue to the town in many ways from the holding of the contest here. Mr. Weale interjected that he would b'k i to see all those whose names wore down put up a guinea at once. The Mayor explained that a lot of preliminary work had to be carried out before they started collecting the money, and Mr. Carter, continuing, said that " although they might not perhaps be prepared to put down a guinea, they would probably put down half a guinea, and Mr. Weala might make up the balanco." (Laughter.) { After some further discussion the following names wore addbd to the list: Messrs W. A. Collis. W. Nicholh, H Dampsey, Thomson, Shotlander,' B. Weale, R. Bayley, Bannister, Bewley, (Wm. Cottier, T. Furlong, jun,, N. King, O. Samuel, N. K. McDiar'mid, Mc-sseuper, Roy, W.H. Skinner, Thos.' Veale, F. P. Cerkill, C. Ahier, D. Berry, F. L, Webstar, R, N. Hooker, 0. E. Bellringer, A.
