TONGAPORUTU.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) I Tohgaporutu has been all but shut out from civilisation for the last two, months; the tunnel blocked and the' main road almost impassable. The cold wet month of July made every place a quagmire. That between the foot ef the Mimi river and tha Uruti read somewhat resembles e. canal. The road iB from three to thity ieet lower j than the ground on both aides, no' drainage of any sort, the road being j the drain. There was a considerable' amount of heavy traffic on it at the beginning of the winter, which completely knocked the bottom out of it. That from the Uruti-road to the hill is bad where the river overflowed. Truly metal ia a blessing in winter. Some substantial buildings have been put up recently—a public hall at Uruti, and Mr. Jo 1 has erected a large house in the upper Mimi, being on the top of a considerable sized mountain. It commands a view of the whole of the Upper Mimi Valley. This mansion is called Glenford—Mountford would be more appropriate. This energetic settler is going to have a butter factory this season in the Mimi Valley, and as he holds some 2000 acres in Tongaporutu most likely he will have a creamery there too. Stock of every kind are looking well along the coast, the severe winter not- . Withstanding. Work is plentiful, road-making and bosh-felling, a fair amount of both being done.
