By 154 to 64 Mr. O'Mara's amend■lent to the Pacific Gable Bill, limiting the Mother Land's borrowing to fiveeighteen'hs, was negatived, as was also an attempt to give the Goverwiien control on the Board, including fixing future rates. The Nationalists urged that the scheme benefitted the colonies alone, and that a cable constructed b j British and Irish oipital ought not to be subject to colonial control. Moreover, the rates were likely to ba cat regardless of commercial considerations. Mr. Aosten Chamberlain said the yropotils showed the true proportions it the responsibility. The Bill wbs passed witheufc amendment, aod read a third time. Mr. Ritchie raised a storm by accepting in committee Mr. W. Bedmond's amendment to <x-mpt from the Factory Bill inspection of convent lanndries. - Mr. Horns deplored the attitude of I Irish membare ia favouring inequality and competition with workers outside. Many Unionists protested agains* the discrimination. Mr. Bitchie erpl ined that the arrangement was meant to save the Bill from obstruction in detail, and he now moved the exemption of all laundries, which was carried by 237 against 65.
