Cannell! . | At Mr. Higaett's lecture, at St. Mpcy'g Hall on Thursday evening a capital silectinn of Tocal and instrumental music was performed by several ladies and gentlemen of local repute. i ;i<>W A man has just given a Reading nr.sou &\ pen»>y for finding a lost purse containing £320 in notes and gold. Advertisement' is | the best cure for such meanness, which, says a London papar, is not, uphappily, so rare as It is astounding. An office Ipv in the City was given a sixpence some time ago'tor finding and returning a .lost cheque for £2,300, made payable to a mining company; and a 'bus conductor at Gravesend received a five-shilling piece from a man to whom 1 be returned a lost bag containing £SOO. ~ A lady who picked up ?, pocket-book with £IO,OOO worth of notas snd cheques, uid searched until she found the owner, was rewarded with half a crown for her pains, and a poor woman at Smithfield a few years since leceived a penny for safely returning a bag with £6OO in gold and notes. There are a large number of cases o f scarlet fever in the town and district of Wood- \ '.He just now. The Rev. H. O. M. Watson, the wellknown incumbent of St. John's Church, Ohristohurch, died on Thursday at Bendigo, Victoria, where he bad gone to see his brother.
We have several times referred to the favourable (trowth of the public taste in matters musicul, as evidenced by tin dej mand for ths highest class pianos, an 1 it is a great pleasure to find that this sign of culture nnrl prosperity continues. At the Colonial Piano Depot there has bren on view this wesk one of the finest specimens of the ce'obrat»d Hopkinson upright grand pianos, which ha« been specially imported to order. The workmanship and material are of the finest qua itv, while the tone is full, mellow aid liquid throughout. In the bass there is a wonderful organ-like power when played forte, with a cipacity for producing soft | round tones thit are particularly sweet. The upper nates aie clear and birdlike, and altogsther the instrument is one that its possessor may well feel proud of, while it is a credit to its world-famed maker.
A meeting of delegates from local Friendly Societies was held last evening to consider the advisableness of holding a Friendly Societies' seven-aside foottalltournamsnt. The following societies were represented : Courts Waireka, ExceWor, Egmont, the Rechabites, and Druids. It was decided that any proceeds should be handed to the Recrextion Ground* Bard. Lodges are asked to send forward the mmes of their players to the secretaries, Messrs. W. Berridgo and H. J. Hobbs, as early as possible. Koberb Douglas, charged at Wellington yesterday with the murder of Mrs. Pain, at Mikiiriki, near Masterton, on h's own confession, was committed for trial. At a s%le of draught horses at Melbonrrie, a New Zealand colt from Brown Heather, by Lord Onslow, sold at 390 guineas. Robbers tr melled 350 feet froai th* pea shore to the strong room of theSelby Smelting Works, Valleji. California, removing a bav of gold valued at seventy thousand sterling. The boat by which they escaped showed a trail of red pepper, to prevent bloodhounds following. In answer to Mr. Fowlds (for Mr. Witheford), who wanted to know if the Govern, medt would put a sum on the Estimates to dredge tho Manukau Harbour, in order to g've access to the wharf at all tides, the Hon. W. Hall Jones said the matter had been receiving the attention of the Goverement. Last year somewhat extensive dredging operations had been cairied out, but it had
been since found that there werß certain passages that required attention, and he hoped to be able to give information on the matter before the rising of the Hoise, Amusing Brbach of Pso isb Cash This is a familiar line in the newspap- rs, and one which always attracts the eye. And yet, when we come to read the report, how often do wc find that the caae is not verv amusing after all. Indeed, considered rightly, the breaking of a promise is a very serious matter. A man who is once guilty of such an act is never trusted again. When we are suffering from indigestion, sick headache, or from any disorder of the stomich, why do we turn to Holloway's Pills 1 Because tbey promise relief in such cases, and have never yet broken their promise du-ine a trial in all parts of the world for nearly sixty years.—Advt.

MGerardy held his audience as in a spell with his full rich tones and faultless technique. AFTER THE BOYAL VISIT. Aftrr exciting times the health of children requires very special looting after, 'that the child is father to the man,' physically as well as mentally, is one of those truths that can never be too often insisted upon, and the. thoughtful parent will be careful above all to see that her child bas the proper nourishment to establUh its constitution. A good constituiion i 9 a rock on which alone success and strength can be built. Among the va-ious foods that science commends in these days for this purpose, none holds a higher place than Nbaves Food for Infante And Invalids. According to tne best medical testimony, and, what is perhaps better still, the grateful testimony of thousands of hippy mothers, this food enntunf all the essential elements of strength, and while it is pleasant to the taste and eagerly taken by children, it may also b» used by persons of all ages with decided benefit. It is a bone-buii'ding, health-sus-taining product that cannot h<* fo warmly recommended and we gladly add oir words of praise to that of the numerous medical journals and experts that have recommended it.
