J The House of Lords has concurred in . the grant to Lord Roberts, Loids Salis- s bury and Spencer eulogising his ser-1 1 vices. J A sixty million Loan Bill was passed , in committee. ( Lord Stanley stated that between 1 Ist April and the end of July the 1 Transvaal war had cos l ', twenty-five and I throe quar-fr million?, the expenditure \ in July Veing a million an 3 a quarter i per week. ' Speaking in the Hou«e of Commons on the Loan Bi'l, Sir M. Hicks-Beach t said the sums vo'e-i for the war would ■ suffice till the middle of February, and ' longer if things went well. It was un \ likely to be necessary to borrow again during the financial year. Already the war expenditure was considerably reduced, while there was reason te antic'pate a larger reduction soon. This remark is interpreted in the lobbies to mem an early recall of foity thousand troops.
