The Daily News. THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 1901. TEACHERS SALARIES COMMISSION.
According to the special oorrespoident of the iVew Zealand Herald, the report <f the commission on teachers salari«s is drawn up and signed. The msmbsrs of tbe commission have, be say«, been bound to secrecy, but he- has bsen gives to understand that the cbi»f featurescf the reportare these:—ln regard to salaries, mala an! feuiali teachers will bo equally paid until salaries reach .£135 per annum. A r ter that amount the capit&tioß gives an ad* vantage to males, bnt the difference is not so pronounced in the proposed scale as it is a-t pressnt. Jo regard to staffing, material improvements are suggested. An assistant will be allowed as soon as an average attendance of 40 is reached. The difference is apparent when we look at Ofcago, which is considered probably the mast liberally staffed district in the clony. At present Otago allows an assistant at 50, and Southland at 65. It wi'l be seen, therefore, that the commission propases to lighten the dutie* of school teachers, atd at the same time make tbe education in the schoo's more thorough. The n*mber of pupil, teaches will, if the Commissioners' recoumendatioi.s are carried into force, be largely reduced, but this charge will ant be made until thnsn now in that class of teachers have completed their apprenticeship. The recommendations of the Commission, if adopted by Parliament, will, it is said, greatly improve the condition of the teaching profession, and w 11 especially benefit the women The report touches upon several important subjects not included in the order of reference. I>, deals, for instance, with teachers' certificates, the pupil teacher system, and the training of teachers. The Auckland dis'rictwill reap p°rhaps mora advantage uorfer the new scheme than any otVer district, because hitherto the teachers undt r tbe Auckland Board have been poorly paid 1 as compared with those under ssme of the other Boards. The new order of i things will mean a very largely in- : crease 1 ! amount of capitation coming to 1 Auckland, A.s an instance of the differeece in salaries which wi'l be ! brought about if the r»port be adopted, ■ I believe I am right in faying that ap : atsiatfnt in a school like Wellesley- ' street, who now draws perhaps .£125, weald Ind his salary increased to £2CO, or in that neighbourhood.
