SIR JOSEPH WARD.

A barouft, tendered to Sir Jeraph Ward, Mini<t*r for Railways and Pent ■sister-General, by the liberal and labour Party of Wellington upon the oenfement of his knighthood, to-k plan in the drill shed to-night. The •ttetidsnce, which numbered over three htndred, was thoroughly representative of all daises of the community. Mr. Allan Ward occupied the •hair, on his ft right being the guast of the evening, and on his left the Speak* r (Sir Maurice Oltorke). Hoar Walker, Hsl 1 -Jones, McGowan, Carroll, Duncan and Mills, and a large number ef members ef both branches of the Legislature were also present. Several apologies for absences were rend, among the number being one tram Mr Sodden, who regretted a very severe cold prevented his being pretest Replying to the toast of his bealrh Sir Joseph Ward, who was enthusiastically received, quoted figures to remove the impression that seemed to exist in some quarters that the colony h«d reacted the height of its prosperity, a< d was on the wane. They should cot allow themselves to be controlled by any spasm of pessimism which might be calculated te- send the colony backward instead of forward. Then was an abundance ef money in the banking institution at the present time, and there was no justification whatever for a pessimistic cry. He scented the idea of any reversal of our prosperity. All classes of the community were in a much batter position ] than when the present administration took office, and with a vigorous, though prudent, public works policy nothing could deter the colony in its march of progress. He heartily thanked the gathering for the gnat honour that had that evening been tendered to him. During the evening Jossph Ward was presented with a handeomrly illuminated congratulatory address from prominent Wellington Trades Unionists.
