Thk welcome to the re'urned troopers took place laat Thursday, and waa a pronounced suootss. la the afternoon th*re waa a procession and speeches, and in the ereoing a conceit and dance nod presentation of medala be* the Mayoress. A great crowd tamed up to the dance, the chief point of which waa the magnificent supper provided br the ladies.
The Eistroad within the Borough boundaries is in a frightful state. To make matters worse, Mr. Stanford baa decid d some bye-law case* in a way that seems to imply that all and sundry hare a right to drive en the fto'path. The stale of {he raid, and the Magistrate's decisions, were the subject of a lively disoussion at the laat meeting of the Borough Council. Dr. Paget urged that it was no use spending more money in taking rases into Court. He spoke strongly against the Magistrate, and said he was prepwed to draft a resolution asking to have him removed. He advocated that a repoit of the cases be seat to the Minister for Justice, and that in the opinion of the Couccil the Magistrate waa entirely wrong in persuading people to break the law. The Mayor also spoke in strong tarms as to the Magistrate'! decision. Eventually it was decided cbnt the Council take farther proceedings. A feature of the bye law eases, by the wav, w s the exceptionally able nay in which Mr. Spence conducted th« deftnce.
The new Bank of New Zealand buildings are now complete, and form an crcamenc to (he town. Just opposite them a fine building is going up, to be occupied by shops and effiora, A moderate calculation places the numb'r of land agents in Stratford at 30. Not bad for a town with a population of a little over 2,000. 1." I 1 —EIiU
