TARANAKI POULTRY, PIGEON AND CANARY SOCIETY'S SHOW.
The twelfth annual show of fcha abov Society was opened at the Dr ]l fl/i _ oa Fiiday mornicg, the larger portio of the exhibits having been penned th - prereiing day. The executive, &ni ma* d with a praiseworthy desire t improve the quality of all classes c i- birds'shown, had ventured on tbe ex pe of raising the entrance fee e j and increasing the prizes, If nny o s, the officers bad any migivings as t the wisdom of that policy, ths re-ulfc a "• evidor c d by the entries must havi b-en a pl'-asant su-pn'se to th'm, wHI the exhibits themselves c'ea-ly provti tha 1 ; tbe sv p taken was in the righ a | direction. In point of number, en'rie t largely exceed those at the previou show, and in' the matter of qua!if,' . was no ques'ion of the ad vain J made over that of pieviom yeira „ Taat this w-s the r.isa was emphwisric s by the opinion of the judges, wk< e cinsid-ired the birds as a who'i were equal to any collection th'i r had ever seen. The Society may 1 therefore, be haarti'y itulated ox y the "result of its efforts, and visitor f should be well pleased, nob only wit! - the excellent birds to bi seen, bu< 1 also with tbe appropriate arrange men's made for conveniently inspect ing th« exhibits. From a commeroia f point of view, what is known as th< - utility cla-s is of the first-class mport ta,nc>, esp cially in view of the pros : peats of good returns held out for . Home shipments. It is yeiy safes' tory, therefore, to find that this class t is not only largely represented, but J that it is highly creditable in the im- " portant matter of quality. It will j fatily be understood that tbe task of , judging, »nder such circumstan.e-', E was one that called in-o play ths » greatfst care and skill of tho;e «p----1 pointed to the work. Uufortunately, . though perhaps naturally, th's made ; the operation somewhat lengthy, and : prevented the ca'a'ogue inning yester- ' day. Th-re is no doubt, hovever, that ! I the awards in nearly t very case met , i with approval. In selecting th-i champion bird in tha poultry class, notwithstanding the high quality of the majority of the exhibits, the judges ouli j have had no hesitation in giving thy Iphce of honour ta Mr. J. R Sin clair's (Wanganui) Indian game cock- ' era], which is a really magnificmt bin), | and tha exhibitor thoroughly de=ei v s tba coveted prize. Thi next b"st bin! in its class was a duck baJong ing to Mr. Fowler, ef Auckland. This I magnificent specimen is as n-ar pecjfeot as possibl-, and runs the champion bird very close for firs place. The pigeons shown are a very meritorious collection, ar/J well w-rth closely irspectfng. fll r Walker (Auckland) cirried off ih e prize fi'r tbe be3t bird in the el s .- while Mr A. BT. Mart ; n (Oiato) ■ floured second phce. The latter wotmore fortunate in tha ranary chs-, in which he secured champ r oi h ui'u s MrE. Hardy (New PlymouMi) rarrying off the prize for tha secon i h at bird. The judge of t-is chss (Mr J. Walker) mußt have bad c;>n<iderabie difficulty in making his award?, as ths exhibits wera numerous and gooi. l Altogether the show is one that is worthy of great praise. Tha commit ee worked wiih a will in furthering the interes's of the Society, and the Secretary, Mr A. Hardy, again proved himself to bi the right man in>ha plac. Pressure of othfcr nutier unfortunate'y necessitates the postponement of publication of thn p ize list to a Liter is>ue. Ths shaw is open again to day and f houH be extensively patronised. In the evanin* the drawing for tbe AH Union of "prize exhibits takes place. The Garrison Bind having kindly oflared to play a sslection of music at the hall this evening should provd an additional £ourco of attraction to visitors,
