A smoke conoert will be tendered to Corporal Barley, cf the TaraDaki Guard?, on Thursday evening at the Guards' Club rooms. Members of the Taranaki Rifles' and TaraDaki Gua'ds with their male friends are cordially invited. Trains will leave New Plymouth statioD connecting with steamers as under : —1 p.sa., Mapourika from South; 9.25 p m., Hapoarika for North; Takapuna, as per notice board at railway station. The Maogaweka correspondent of the Wairarapa Daily Times states:—"The two new hotels were opened at Taibape on Monday, and as a result the drunken brawls and street fights were something disgraceful. As early as 10 o'clock in the morning fighting took place in the public thoroughfare. Unless the Police Department nip this sort of thing in the bud, matters will be very serious when pay day comei round." The annual meeting of the Taranaki Horticultural Society is fixed for Friday next, the 12th inst., at 7.30 pm, in the Council Ohambers.
A reminder is given of the meeting at the. Theatre Moyal to-night, when Mi Frank W. Isitt will deal with the Stipendiary Magistrate's addresses on licensing questions. His Worship the Mayor will preside.

The Maoris at Pibama are unfortunate in having poor potato yields this year. When the crops were well above the ground, and giving every promise of being as good as usual, the tops withered away, and the result is that the potatses are small and scarce.
All milk suppliers complying with the regulations as to inspection, etc., of dairies under the Dairy Industry Act., 1898, are now furnished with a certificate, and every conveyance used in the sale of milk is required to be thoroughly cleaD, and shall have the name of the owner clearly printed thereon. By noting the above, purchasers can satisfy themselves that their milk comes from a dairy wh»re both the cattle and the premises undergo inspection. Mr 0. The cable steamer Britannia has arrived at Auckland. She found a giod cable route from Nerfolk Island. It lws been decided to land the new cable at Doubtless Bay. The Biitannia proceeds on Wednesday to Norfolk Island to survey to Fiji and via Fanning Island to Honolulu. The Anglia, which lays the cable, is expected farly next year.
