WAITARA NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspoadent.) A special meeting of the Wai*ara Town Boird was held on Monday evening to Vike a library rate of in the I ound, and to adopt the annual balance sheet. Present: Messw Ogle (OhnirHiin), Chippell, Hignett, Frasar and Poarce. The rate was duly struck, md the balance sheet, wWch showed a f-ir b mount tf progress, was adop'ed. Less than 50 years ago the learned men of Europ* would have said that they must, not go further than the days of Solomon to find litera'ure, but they now know for a certainty that th> re were writings and libraries btfore the ime of Abraham. As a mat'er ol fact, tablets of clay containing writings, or li'erature, have been found dating back 2000 years b.fore Moats! The historian of tbe future will be kind enough to lake a 'note respecting Waitara. At tbe ordinary mesting of the Boird, which was held immediately after the sp-cial meeting, Dr. Valentine, Health Officer, attended and made a report of bis inspection of tbe town. He eaid that much remained to be done, Waitara compared very favourably with towrs of its own size he had visited, so far as the fanitiry arrangements were concerned. He suggested, as the nucleus of a drainige scheme, thut a main draiu be Md down the principal sreet (VlcLeiu street), and that in th* first instance the three hotels be required to connect their premises with the dtain. The proprietors of the various hoels expressed their williognc ss to meer. the rtquiraments and to pay a sum of £ls each for the or thu connection. This was carried and specifications for the work will he pr-« pared without delay. Dr. Pomire is t», vi*it Waitara to look afier the native requirements. The Railway Department wrote respecting tha removal of the Statiou<nast'r's house, and it was resolved that on tbe understanding that the land on which tbe lioiiee is standing be gezeit-d to the Board, and that a right-of-way of fifty feet in width at the back of tha station be permitted in thi meat time, the Board will not requiio the removal of tbe Statien master's hou e for a period of four years. Tbe Works Comm'ttee repo'ted thit the various works in hand had been completed, and recommended that the practice of cirting rubbish to the liver bank on Hrown-stiees should be stipped.
