Mr. L, Sarten has received a letter from Mr. Chas. D. Irvine, C.E., now of Hokiingi, regarding the New Plymouth brtakwa'er, in the course of which he says: —" In a lec'ure th»t I gave in the old Jhall at 'New Plymouth som* 20 years ago, a repo't of which appeared in the Weekly News (Taranaki) I pointed out that the design for the breakwater then proposed and since ca-ried out was fuil'y inasmuch as it would prove a veritable' Far.d trap' and entoil constant expense to keep tie j I arbour clear.
