VOLUNTEER NOTES.
(By Veteran.) Tha usual weekly pa r ade of the Guards was held on Tuesday n'ght, when there was a good muster, the men being put thiough a number of evolutions under Captain Taunton and Lieutenant Holmes 9nd Cook.
| Before dismissing the Com pany Capt. Taunton complimented tbe members on their smart appearance on the occasion of the Battalion parade on Friday las'-, land the general efficiency Bhown in carrying out their work in all the movements they were called upon to pet form.
Ap < po : al was submitted that thi men should accept tickets for the Rifles' Ball to be held on Monday next, in lieu of tho personal payment due to them for tbe daylight p rade on Friday. The proposal was carried unanimously, and it was announced that the Rifles hed promised to return the compliment vvheH the Guards' Ba'l wash* Id, on Ist August next.
[ At a meeting of the Pate* Rifles, Cap-ain Adams said the men themselves were responsible for his resignation. The men, he s-id, seemed to think they were dcin» the ctptain a favor by attending porades, wbi'e the reverse sbou'd be the case. He had siace the corps started, done practically the whole work of the compiny, down to carrying ammunition to the range and taking down the targets, and the men looked on it as part cf his duly.
11 is evidently intended to make the Volunteer review in Has'ey Patk, Ohr'scchijrch, the bi£ thing in the Volunteer line of the Duke of York's visi ■. Enquiries are bj>ng made everywi ere of the number of men going, sj as to make the uece-siry arrangements. It is to be hoped variom corps<*ill be well lepiesented.
Last right the reareta-y of the Education Board received tbe following telegram:—
"Th i Pre id i r desires me to a«certain numter of fill ranks of eaitto in connection with schools in your district, distingu : shing those in uniforms and these tot, with a view to their proceeding to Ohiis'chureh ; minimum height, 4ft. Gin, excepting boys wh'» are otticers or non-commissioned office, s, The information is required immediitely, ro a* to ariapge for transpor', liuu-jing, and rationing. These wi 1 be found by the Government.
"J. W, Loveoay, C'-pt in, I " Organis'rg Officer." In ront ect on wi h ou<" cage's New Zo hud is a long way boliir.d Aus-tralia. During the late Fed-ral demonstrat'on in Melbourne Surgeon-Captain Barclay, of Canterbury, says he was "vtry much impressed with the cadet system iu thf* s thiol 4. He think-* it, infinitely in alvant.e of our sys'em, acd he will eiJeivour to have it or
some modification of it introduced hereToe be iring and general demeanour of tbe Victorian cadets struck him, as it did every one else, as something very fine. The mere fact of putting these young boys Into uniform, giving them a small rifle to handle, and placing them to a certain extent und«r orders seemed to mak) little men of them and to put them on their beat behaviour." A story is going.round that the captain of one of tbe visiting complies of Volunteers at the Bittalion parade last Fi idiy stepped out from his company and complained that the exercises given were not. what he considered should be given. The adjutant has not recovertd yet from the shock he received at such t* breach of discipline. This officer evidently believes in an independent command.
The Egmont Peltier, in referring to the visit of tho Stratford Rifles to the Battalion p.irade in New Plymouth on Friday, says inter alia : "1 he officfw Ml out, and the compaoi.fi ware marched by their co'our-sergeants to the diff- rent hotels, where arrangements bad bern made by Acting-Adju-t :nt Taun'on for the men to be billeted. The management was perfect, and Captain Taunton de erves full credit for the forethought he had given to the men's comfort."
