The Daily News. SATURDAY, MAY 4, 1901. IMPROVED TRADE FACILITIES.
1 A good deal has been kuH ani written , during the past few month* regarding the increasing trade of the port of N«w Plymouth. A very pleating indication of the increasing trad« is to be found in the action of the Union S.S. Company in establishing a direct service batwean' New Plymeuth and the principal South Island ports. In the past there has been co regular steamer trading between New Plymouth aud the South Island, and go?ds and produce fi ora aod to New Plymouth had to be transhipped at Wellinglon or wait till one of the Greyodouth or Westp<rfc eeuriers ex'ended her tiip to New Plymouth. Latterly thfsextended trips have been taknn with more or Itss frrquency. and the facilities afforded caustd a rapid incre*pe in the trade. The chief drawback was the wintcf legulaiity, and 1 usiness people were put to coi.s doraLle if convenience through the irregularity. The Union S.S, Co., wi h the enterprise that has always char ct'rifo 1 the company, have now decided to establish a regulir s~>r--1 vice, and frave so*: apart the Upolo for tho purpose. Tlio Up »lo left Dunedin on Monday lat-t, and arrives at New Plymouth to-morrow on her initial tiip, leiving on Monday on her return to Dunedin. The Upolo will thus leave New Plymouth for Dunedin and intermediate every alternate Monday. Should tfce trade warrast it we understand that the Union Company are pwpartd to put another steamer on this route, thus making tho service a weekly one. The Up lo'» time-table will be as follows; Leaving Dunedin Monday sho calls at Oamaru, leaving there late on Monday evening for Timaru; leaving Timaru on Tuesday, calling at Akarop, arriving at Lyttelton Tuesday evening; leaving Lyttslkon on Wrdnesdny for Wclling'on, arriving at Wellington on Thursday, leaving Wellington on Friday for Nelson, leaving Nelson on Saturday and arriving at New Plymouth on Sunday. On her return trip she leaves New Plymouth '" Monday direct for Wellington, having Wellington on Tuesday, Lytteiton aud Akaroa on Thursday, Timaru faid Oamaiu on Fiiday, airiving at ' Dunedin on Saturday. The advantigrs j of a regular service like this to busi- , ness people must eommend itse'f to 1 everyone who has the welfare of the town and district. Tha Upolo is a fine vesssl of 1144 tons and 1000 1

Anyone ««. ti ;g u '-ftrtright's holiday by taking a id m. ticket by h'l* would fce n'i a.l" to - visit Nelson, Wellington, Ly.tt 'tim.iObristichurcb, Akaroa, Timaui, Oimiwcu, and Dunedin where a whole Sunday would ba spent. We understand fche' new scrvica has been instituted o'twiig to the representations of Mr. Wsljbifr the local manager of the Union Com-1 pany, a gentleman who spates oo.pnios t > run iho red funnel steamers in 'this interest of the trading and trav llirg public of this district. We do not know if aay official no-ice'is ta,'be taken of this new service; but the Mayor, and the Chamber of Commerce, Would be doing a graceful act if they could see tiieir way to publicly recognise the value of such a service to the trade of the port, •
