[Note.—Section 3337 baa , 31ft. lin. frontage to Broagham street i by 66ft. Sin. to King street] I Tine Secretary of the Postal Daparfj.raent. wrete as follows:—" I have the , honour, by direction of the PostmasterGeneral, te enquire whether yoir Council is t wi ling to put under offer to the D'P'rtment part pf the borough reserve at tho corner of King and Brougham streets, adjoining feotiona 43, 44 aud 45, at the price of £3O per foot, In the event of the Oouocil agreeing to <"o si, enquiries i would be made as to the suitability of the section as part of a site for a nawl Post Office; and ths question of the ; land to ba offered in exchange would be considered. The Chairman of the H<rbour Board had been written to similarly in respect to sections 43, 45 and 45.
The Borough solicitor wrote advising tha*! legisl&tion was necstsary to enable the Council to sell or to cxcbangs for other lands.
In reply to Or. Veale, the Mayor said that the Council could only legally sell the land upon obtaining legichtiva saoc'ion.
Ci*. Bellringcr in moving the adoption cf the r a port, said he had obtained opinion on the matter himself, and war advised that the Council should ecdeavour to get the full value of the Ian 1 ), Personally, he did not see any Feed for the erection of a Post Office in tha*; place, as the Government hnd an excellent sita at present, but if the majority of the burgerses thought a new office shou'd bo built in street, then he wou'd support lt/ai he did not want th'i Ooun «1 to be accused of acting con'rary to the interests of the town. Mayor suggested tint a limit should be fixed to the time given the Department to accept the Council'e oiler. Or 801 l ioger said he would flgree to thi t'me b>ing limited to 31st July. Or. Vial# thought the land would become much more, valuable than i!3O a foo'.
Cr, Oillis thought tho Council's interest* were safeguarded by the proviso that an equivalent value of land should be exchanged for it. The land received would ho doubt increase in value a« well as tha piece'tp be given. Cr. Carter hoped nothing rould be den- thafc would int«»f»re wi'h tbe erection of a new post office. People were anxious that more postal accommodation should soon be availab'e.
| The Mayor thought the value put on the land wan a reasonable onp, though porhaps not quite equal to its commercial value. A new post office wtuld b" an ornament to tbe town, and would enhance property Taints in the neighbourhood.
Cr. Ballrinper s'ill contended that the present Post Office site was the best in the town—-
Or. Stohr : Except one further west! —(Laughter.) | (Jr. Uelh'inger: And would not be iequalled by the pr.pos'd-site. How-o'.'«-r, as he had said, he would voti for the land to bi given as proposed fur a n(w office. He said Cr. Veale saem'd to have lrst sight of the fact that on equivalent v..1u0 of la>.d was being received by the Oouucil,
Or. Olotr agr. Ed, and the report Wds adoptid.
