TRAWLING IN THE TARANAKI
BIGHT. THE DOTO'3 TRIALS. As yesterday morning the Government trawler Doto, after being detained in harbour for a week owing ts stress of weatber, mide a start at 8 o'clock on Wednesday morning to test the waterj of the Taranaki c~ast. The vessel made a few cants off the Sugar--1 «v<B, and th«n preceded about halfway down the c ast to Cipe Bgmont. From there she turned towards the north, and tested as far as M<. k. u The m»jori».y i f the tests were made in from 25 to 35 fathoms of water, and - fijh were found iu rather l e'tfr nnmb:rs than during the la-t f«w trials made list wetkto the north of Wai'ara. Among the fish taken were a fair cum ber of lemon solep, a va*iety considered more delicate than the ordinary sles, tirakihi, gumird, and skate. The greatest distance fff shore trst d was about 17 miles out from the Whit a Cliffs, wheie the depth averaged 40 fa'.homs. The bottom, Mr. Ayson report', wt-.s found to be fairly even and suitnhle for trawlin» operationsall alon® the coast. Althcugh the results of this trial have bean encouraging, Mr. Ayg'.n consirie s that in order to prove the rial v«lua o? the fishing grounds it will bi nece'sny make other tests at different seasons of the year, »s seme place* wh< re fish may be plentiful at one season may; he comparatively barren at another. Though the weather had cleared up oa Wednesday the sea outside was sti 1 pretty lively, and the little Doto was accordingly somewhat frisky in her behaviour. Mr. Aysin has cow comp'e'ed bis work in th's neighbourhood, and proceeds overland to Wellington. The Dato, whess chatter to the Government has expired, will go on south probably today.
