from Mokui lata on Friday evening. Several o' the p'rty, in t-heir anxiety to get back <ifte;'adati!)tionof a coup a ' ef days at Tongaporutu, got put across ' the river and arranged for a trap to meet them at Puken'uha, walkinground the cliff i. This euubled them to catch tha mail train ah Wairara and gqt in r .o town by that train, The remainder of the party got acress the river soon after and thus reiohed town abaut 11 p.m. In the course of an interview with a representative of the News Mr. Hasoldnn, Ohrtii'rnan of the Commission, stated that o .ving to an unfortunate I misunderstanding no steamer was] available to taka them up the river, consMjuensiy they last a couple of days at Makau. Regarding what they had seen it was difficult to s*y much without anticipating thuir ri-part. There was, however, no harm, aod it was only fair to say that they were all j pleasantly surprised at the extent to which the coal had been op<med up, and the quality of the coal was very much I superior *o what they had been led to I expact. The Ojmaiiision were charrnsd with the river and the scenery through which they had passed, both en the river and on the way up and down the osast. Oa the whole the trip had bean an enjoyable one, and the rat-m----beraof the Craimission appeared, judgfrom Mr. Haseldean's remarks, to bs rather favourably impressed with whtt they had seen. Regarding Whangamomona, Mr i Haselden said he could bold out no hope of visiting that 1 .(uhty. It ap- ! pearad to be outside the scope of their ', commission and if they werj to begin ; visiting ou*; crops, he f aareJ they would have an endless task. Personally, the Commission would gladly visit the locality if they could «ee tha 1 ; is came within their province to do so or coul 1 do any good by doing go.
