WHANGAMOMONA COAL.
In connection with the small samp'e of, the Whangamomona coal fo? which we mentioned a ago we were indebted to Mr. B. A. Hignett, an interesting experiment hub just bfcan made by Mr. Peter Ross of New Plymouth, a Mining Engineer ci considerable experience. Mr. Ress has had a good deal to do with various samples of coal and obtained a portion of tha sample at the Daily News Officp, and 'which, we may mention, had attracted considerable notice. Mr. Rjss tested 6dwt of the coal and procured 3dwt B»rs of gas, the residue being 2dwt lfigrs of coke of a peculiar metalic appearance, but of good quality. Mr. Ross says be has never seen a coke just like it. It burns well and gives oft' a great beit and is pavticulaily bright, hard, and c!osa grained, and is in his opinion an rxtremely valuable coke. The gas burned with a cl.ar bright light, especially towards the finish when the impurities had be»n thrown oft', for fully ten in/auk's ;»n| orifice of abjoryt, an <-ighth of an inch in ' diavaet.tr. Examined order •■ i'O'.vr; ■; ful microscope the cord r Ilos< VOry favourably aid in int-im! , with the assistance of Mr, Teed, i
chemist of JNew Plymouth, to prosecutive further enquiries. We may mention that; Mr. Arthur JM of the New Plymouth Gas Works has exprewed to a gentleman on theNuwg staff his to to.it the gag-' producing quality of the W hanjamomona coal if a sufficient quantity to make a fair trial can be procured, and we understand efforts are being made in that direction.
