OPUNAKE NOTES.

(from oub own correspondent), ' Wno said that Opunaka was Hot pro--1 cresting ? If any one was so misguided as to make that assertion, let him hide his diminished head ? Carnival in aid of Band fund; £2OO or mere taken. We congratulate Bandmaster Cummins, Mr. J. Stewart, and the members of 1 the Band on the splendid suec?ss of ! thsir undertaking. Great good luck 1 attended them throughout. Boauti--1 ful weather, attendance of the Governor, aud vi-it of Mr. Htil-Jones, and i the promote*s of the Bind Carnival well deserved it. They have had an • up-hill battl- to fight, and they have i made a triumphant suceess of it. The Band is a good one now, and we have i row doubt that this accession to their funds will matter it even better. The Carnival began on Wednesday, 1 27th March, and lasted until Monday, 1 the Ist April. Tho attendance through- ' out was remarkable good. On Friday •he hall was densely packed, for on 1 that evening tho Governor was present, attended by bis airl-de-camp. The Bind played "God Save tbe King" and the audience uncovered loyally. Tho representative of His Majesty ' sained golden opinions by his geneality and afF-ability, and as he was leaving ! three hearty cheers were given him. 1 The proceedings were then resumed, 1 and the ladies played dreadful havoc with tbe loose c.«sh of tbe male element, Then " Sprinks the Baker " 1 occupied the stage for a time, and 1 some of our residents of well-known ; histrionic ability had an opportunity of once again delightiag tho audience i with their performances. On Satui'day nieht the prizes were shot for, and on Monday night the Carnival wound up 1 with a dance. 1 Never has Opunakfi had a more snccesful carnival, and w« again congratulate the promoters and also those ladies who worked so well for the success of the affair. The ftall-holders were: Furniture stall, Mrs. Swazlaud ; fancy goods stall, Mrs. Fowler; refreshment stall, Mrs. White ; drapery stall, Mrs, DesForges ; toy stall, Mrs. Briggs ; supper table, Mrs. Duffill, Mrs. Guy, Mrs. Stanton, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Dudley, and Mrs. Wallis. The lady canvessors wore:—Mrs. Bradley and the Misses K. Kelly, Duffill, Hickey, Sscombe, Swazsland,Callander, Cassidy, Penney, and Hickman. The success of the whole Carnival is duo in no small degree to the energy, zeal, and good humoured perseverance, not to say pe-tinacity, of those ladirs. We must not forget the flower tho flowers for which were tho prizi blossoms exhibited at tbe Manaia flewer show, and which «"ore obtained by Mrs. O'Brien and presented by her to the Carnival Committee. It was by thoughtful acts of ku-.dnoss like this and tho genuine de-ire for the public s?ood and by cheirfuliy working together and burying private differences that tho splendid ■ of tho Carnival was attained. \nothe ■ nntter on which the town is to bo congratulated is the opening of the Athoramm. The men who have quietly av d unostentatiovs'y worlted f'T this institution deserve the thanks of the lommunity. The (ommitreej '■onsiht ■ of th j following gentlemen : Massis. Moore, Col nndor.Ony, Stewart, Christie, and J. Boss. "The rooms are i now open to the put lie. Your valuable space will not permit me to describe all tho events nf the wenk in this letter, but I trust ta place bufure your readers much interesting mat'or; mi-xt week concerii'Ti<? the visi's of tho (!mvh-?ior, Mr. Hal'-Jones and Mr.' Mi Guire.
