THE COUNTY COUNCIL AND THE TOLL GATES.

The toll gate qut stion has reached a crisis, the Chairman acd the whole of i the Couacil having reeigmd their seats. ! This hasty action ©n the part of the Council is to be regretted, although as tending to bring about a settlement of this vexel question, and giving the ratepayers, as a whole, an eppertuni y of deciding the questiQß, it was parbaps the beat thing to do. The unhappy diff renco of opinion on the matter in the council itself will now probably he settled, and the new council coming back with a direct maadute from the ratepayers should l«ad to the council warking with less friction than of Ia f e. We are of opinion that the most satisfactory method to have adopted would havj been to have taken a poll on the question of toll gates or no tall gatee. The vote would then have been oa a direct issue, clear of any question of the personality of the several candidate!. In the election ; now to tike place it is easy to Bse how half-a-dozsn questions may be raised and the direct issue lost sight of. It is to be hoped that the election will be fought ob the direct issue as it will then be seen what are the wishes of the ratepayers on the subject. No doubt the Chairman of the Council will take an early opportunity of pkc > ingthe position charly and concisely - befere the ratepayers so that they may gi»e an intelligent vote oa the question.
