At the Midland Railway Commission, W, Wood, President cf the Chamber ef Commerce, considered tbe completion of tbe line would He a great advantage to Canterbury and Westland, and that the line would pay if special rates were charged. G. G. Stead did not consider the railway, if completed, would pay for 20 years, but a large proportion of merchandise and coal now rent by ren would go by rail if tbe line wera ready.
