THE TOLL GATE QUESTION.
On g-io 1 autso- ity ws are infor msd that the Puniho *o!l gate has been cuA down, sawn op and remsTod, and last evtning a rumor was ottrrent in town that tbe HeimsrA toll gate his also be»n removed. This action has been taken, it is plainly asserted, to stsp the pale of the gates on Saturday. In any case ths getters in the cssn of the latter gate are foraiing a deviation and are deternintd to resist tbe imposition of tolls to the uttermost. It seems s. pity something cannot ba done to stop the great expanse being caused by tho li*gal proceedings going on. We have been shown Mr. Samuel's opinions a»d a subscription list and the nomber of subscriptions of £5 and less show the determination of the sottlerg to fight this question. Toll gates are eo obnoxious a«d such a costly way of wising revenue that everyone will sympathise with the settlers in their determination to fight them, The members of the Council should remember they are only the servants of tho ra'epayers who certainly bave a righ* to drcids whether they will have toll gates or not. If the Council wish to ac 1 ; fairly with tho ratepayers let them tako a poll on tha quostion and abide by j;he result.
