PECULIAR INSIDENT IN AUCKLAND.

PER PliKsS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, March 19. A regrettable incident occwriel in Shurtknd-strccr. at an early hour this morning, H. C. Woollmer, manager of the Waitekauri Extended Gold Mining Company, arrrived from the Thames about 2 a.m., ,and had occasion to go to his office. On coming out a pair ef arms gripped him. Thinking be was being attacked by robbers, Woollmer struck at tho man, at the sama time calling for help. Hia crks brought two other men upon tbe scene, and they joined with the first man in endeavouring to secure him. Presently ono of them feeling blood on his hands, ealloi out, " I'm stabbed." It transpired that the blood he fell) was really Woollmers, as he was stiuek several blows on the head with his own walking stick. Just then a policeman in uniform appeared with two or threa others, and Woollmer at once gave himself up, under the impression that hia supposed assailants would be arrested also. On his suggestion the detectives—for such they proved to be—took him to the Auckland Club, where he was at onuo identified and release d, It is evident there was a misunderstanding on both sitfes, the detectives apparently believing they had caught a burglar, while Woollmer was, not unnaturally, under the impression that he was being robbed,
