STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. Wellington, March 12. At a meeting of representativi s of the Citizens Commit'eo and of thn Council this afternonn, the Maj-or, who presided, said he considered sufficient calls bad been made on the contt Anting public during the list year, aid he bad teld the Premier so, and sugg?svd tbat Parliament be asked to make sp'cial prevision to supplement the £250 voted by the Council towards meeting the expenses of tbeßival vis-fc, and the Premier bad intimated Ids willingness to advance a Bill for that purpose. The Premier who was also present at the meeting said that while he did not for a moment propose to encourage extravtgance, he was desirous that New Zealand should not faU behind Sydney and Mplbourne in the natter of display; therefore he considered it the duty of Parliament to take the necessary steps to legalise any expenditure tbat might be incurred. If a strict interpretation of the law were insisted upon by the Audit Department it would not be fair to hove members of lroal bodies surcharged for any reasonable expenditure incurred, and the Government had derided not to put loe*l bodies in this position. The Premier made a number of suggest'ors es to decorations and firework*. The 8000 troops he said would not take part in the as a section of mounted troops only would act as a bo !y guard, the r tnainder would line the streets.
