THE WESLEYAN CONFERENCE AND THE LIQUOR QUESTION.
COMMENTS ON TUB MAGISTBAOY. (PICK PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, March C. A number of We?layan Clergymen and Liymen, now in the city for t'jo Conference, interviewed the Premier today. They drew his attention to the fact that a J.P. was connected with cerlain sly grog-selling offences at Ttipanui and they asked that as this particular Justice had countenanced a breach of the law hii name should bo removed from the roll.
The Premier promised to make enquiry.
The deputation also drew attention to the fact that Mr. Stanford, S.M., in convicting for sly grog-selling at S-rat-ford had remarked that those who opposed the introduction of licenses in the district were as much to blame as the grog-sellers and ought to bear part of the penalty of fine or impiisonment. The deputation thought such remark should be met with a s'rong reprimand. Mr. Seddon, in reply, s tid be could not interfere with the magistracy, except in such cases as neco-sitated the services of the occupant of the Bench being dispensrd with.
