He soon took a leading position, being Deputy 17.8. District Attorney from 1849 to 1853. He was tho leading counsel for President Johnson on bis impeachment trial n 1868, and acted as counsel for the United States in the Alabama Arbitration. Iu 1877, ucder Pi-esident Hayes, he became (secretary of State mtil 1881. An acceoiplished scholar, >\a able speaker, and a legal authority of no mean order, he was an ornament of the American bar and the Senate.]
