MAORI DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER.
pbr press Wellington, March 3, A deputation of Maoris representing the tribes siuth of the Manawatu River waited on the Premier on Saturday with a request that the new acts affecting na'ivd lands, passed last session, should not be made to apply to thtir lands. The Premier explained, generally, the efiects of the legislation, and promised that the natives should b« given the option of having their lands brought under the Ac's or not. The reply was considered satisfactory. The deputation was introduced by Mr. W. C. Fisld, MER, and Ropita Te Ao acted as spokesman. There were also present representatives of the Ngatiriukawa, Ngatihoa, Ngatiawa, and Muaopoke tribes. The deputation asked that they should be allowed to entertain the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall during their approaching visit at some place up the coast, preferably at Horowhenua Lake. The Premier ?aid the time at the disposal of their Roy3l Highnessas would not be sufficient to allow of any such arrangements being made.
