WESLEYAN CHURCH CONFERENCE.
PER PRKSI ASSOCIATION. Wellington, February 28. The Annual Conference of the Wesleyan Church was opened this Bve«iujr. The retiriag prisiiJent, Rsv. J. S.| Smalley, flatly denied the statementpublicly made that the Methodist Union in New Zealand had been a failure. The effort of the church to raise £60,000 as a New Century Fund had not been entirely successful, but over £\ 7,000 had been promised, and nearly £II,OOO paid. There was no ground for discouragement or humiliation, they had only over estimated the resources of their people. The conn?xional funds had been well maintained, but in some districts there had been a decrease of preaching places and Sunday schcols. There was a necessity for a great revival of spiritual life in tfceir churches • more liboureis were wanted, ministers and male and female lay agents. Tee ignorance, debauchery, and hideous condition of a large portion of the Maoris was a standing reproach to Christian people. The Rev. G. H. Garland was elee'ed President and Rev. D. J. Murray secretary.
