MAN'S HUMANITY TO MAN.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir. —" HumancH " letter unier the above heading, which appeared in yoiv issue of the 21st inst, phased mo very' much. I entirely »grae wi'h your orro-pondent that every person, eveo ja drunkard his claims on cur sympathy and should |rec ive human treatment. " Humanity," however, in drawing attenion to a recent case of apparent neglect of a rain who was believed to be drunk, do'a not suggest whit provisi n might ba made for such c ees, but mertly Warns the ac'ion of peivons who undoubtedly didnil that was pvsible undfr a system which most pug'-us must as leading to gra;it distress. The question of hov of insensible drunken persons found in the etrrets should be dealt with is another matter, but a difficult one. Private people with f*mili3B could not for many qVvious re isods receive persons in such a state into their home s . In towns a constable m»y fiVd several oisi's nightly, but, however kiadhoif ted he may be, he is unable to do more than take the men into custody. Such unfortunates our br*thr. n when fund, ought to be comfort ibly lodged and receive proper atten'ion, but by whom is this to be done ? Surely, by the local governing bodies for thoy receive the licensing feej for the eale of the liquor which is tho re-il the evil. I would suggest that themo-ieys so received be applied to the establishment and maintenaroe of properly equipped hospital-!, where the subjectshould ba cared for at>d nursed untl completely restored. Ii the event of the revenue from licenses being insufftoient to tho expenditure 'et the ratepayers contribute by subsidies taken out of ritoa ; should theie be a surplus let it be pnid to the Government .towards the maintenance of a colonial asylum for inebriates.—l am, &?., Practical Sympathy, February 22rd, 1901, GOD GIVE US MEN.
