At the General SyDed te-day the business was almost purely formal, The report of tha Committee on the amendment of the canon for the trial of Bishops was received, and the report of the mission was referred to the Mission Committee. The rest of the afternoon session was occupied in sanctioning the lease, (lie, or exchange of church lands at Eltham, Wellingteu, Masterton, and Hamilton. The Bill moved by the Bishop of Waiapu in reference to the authority of Bishops being required for alteration in church fabrics and utensils was thrown eat en the second reading. At the evening session, the Bishop of Ohristohurch moved the second leading of the Bill to amend the methods of election of representatives of the , Syned. Tbe Bill was lost by the vote a | of the laity. Najmeb, Febuary 5. At the General Synod to-day, the motion by the Bishop of Wellington that legal advice be taken as to whether any alteration of fundamental articles (1 to 6) of the constitution would jeopardise the title to endowment, was defeated by a majority of all orders. L«ig resolutions wera submitted by Dean Fitclmtt for religieus teaching in scho&ls on the lines of the New South Wales system, and to give grants to denominational sehools passing State inspection. The Bishop of Dunedin advocated a lecturing crusade throughout the colony to arouse people on the subject. The Rev. 0. Harper thought the clause relating denominational schools would arouse much opposition, and moved its excision. The debate was adjourned.
