INCREASE OF SALARY.
TO THE EDITOR,
Sib, —I see by the papor that the Secretary of the Harbour Board has applied for an increasa of salary and that the Ucnrd has left the matter over for the new B'.ard to deal with. Well, sir, considering the Cltrk only devotes a p»rt of his time to Harbour Board matters, as he holds several other offices for which he is well paid. Do you not think it is quite possible to g*t a Clerk equally as capable as the present one. Who would devote the whole of bis time to the duties, and do it for what it is done for, thinking himself well paid. Our present Government are trying to break down monopolies, but this, I consider one of the greatest. A regular family aS'iir. If the BUrtour fjre sincere in their protestations of economy,' let them advertise for a Secretary at the present - or even .£SO less salary, and see how mnny applicants they would have for office, qui'e as capable of carrying out the duties as the present S cretary,—l am, ete., Pftp Bono Publico.
