The success which attended the production of " What Happened to Jones " in Melbourne and Sydnfy, where that hilarious farca hold the boards for ovor 50 performances in efu'k citv, is sure ' fo be repeated in New Plymouth, 1 its production nesfe Tueidiy night at the Theatre Royal, by Mr. Charles Arnold and his clever company of comedians. A glande at the f ore or of " Jones " shows unmistakably that the faroe is the great*si laugh-raiser of modem times. Not ev.m "Th« Private has equalled it as a maker of wrriment and money. In London, New York, and Chicago it wa* the reigning attraction for lengthy seasons, but ev.ia the large receipts cf those cities wet's exceded in Melbourne and Sydnay, where the profis reached a fabulous pum. The Princess Theatre has been the home of many a treasury record, but only two of them, the sea r or>s cf the first Gaiety Company and Sarah Bernhardt, have eclips d the recent run of "What to Jones." To brgio with, "Jones" was at onre bailed by all classes of the oomroVi y as tho best of all thu bright, things ever seen on the southern stage. Men of every callicg in life roared at its unceasing fuo, while the women! folk, charmed by its picture-quo frowning, made attendance at its puform--1 anca a fashionable duty. The fun is noli a succession of flashes in t.he p in, but gops with a rattle and dazzle from 1 beginning to end, without being at any time of the kind that leaves a nasty ] tasto in the mouth. The season is limited to two nights, and another ! soreaming funny comedy entMed j "Why Smith Lsf t Home," is announced l for Wednesday night.
