DISEASED CATTLE AT OMATA.
TO THE EDITOJt. [ Sib, —Allow me a small ppaca in your valuable journal, to h*vo a word to say with regard to bringing diseased cattle from all over- the dis rict, spreading the dißease as -hey go, and El mghtering same within 4g chains oil' the Barrett Rjad, and within 15 feet of a private road, the sm U at timesj is something disgusting, and almost unbearable. One bullock that was sent to the works to bs slaughtered, was in the last stage, and was not able to get there, so it- laid on the road for the best part of two days' and one night, then had to be killed- in the read,/ and then drawn to" its distinatioo. A .petition was- got up and signed by the people of'ifthe district against' 'the slaughtering of diseased cattle in their midst, and then a counter petition w»s got up by the party interested in the works, and was . signed by a good many that were not interested in the matter, thereby causing a nuisance to their fellow settlers, which they would not like themselves. The second petition went on to say that it was a very good place for the purpose, and a great many who.signod, very likely had never seen the place at all. The place chosen for the purpose is net suitable,,, for the very reason that wherever the works are built on the said land, the drainage and filth from the same will run into the small creeks, and thence into the Mongatuku river to the detriment of numerous farmnrs, whose farms abutt on the said river. To my knowledge, two beasts have died' in the said creeks and allowed to rotfthero, without any burial whatever, and the filth allowed to run into the said river.—l am, etc., Komutu.
