The Daily News. TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1901. THE IMPERIAL TROOPS.
The meeticg called by IJis Worship the Mayor for this evening to consider tha question of securing a visit from, at least, a portion of the Imperial troops about to visit the colony, bids fair to be well attended. The press throughout Taranaki is heartily supporting the idea, and there appearj (every likelihood that if the meeting ! desires it, that one half ef the men | will go to Auckland via Taranaki and {the ether half via Hawke's Buy. ! Although this is not so satisfactory jas the whole body passing through it will &fc Jeast enable the people of TaraI naki to tes for themselves these splendid i specimens of Great Britain's famous i fighting regiments from both the Old Country and India. It is probable 1 that the Imperial troops will come ns I the guests of the officers and men of : the Taranaki corps of volunteers, an | Appe.il being made to the public to assist them in suitably Jenteriaining them. If this course is adopted it will be ; one that should find favour throughout : the whole provincial district, and there is .little doubt but that the Taranaki volunteers woald be glad of an opportunity of parading in company with j their Imperial brethren in arms. .A I review of the local volunteers' and the Imperial troops, say on the racecourse, j would be exceedingly popular, and if special trains were run, it would prove a very great attraction. We understand Captain Okey, leoior officer of the district, is ascertaining the feeling of his bi other officers on the subject and ia the hands of such energetic , officers as himsalf, and Captain Taun- . tori, tye affair is sure to ba a great succeas. li is ft>any years since Tara- ! naki had a military display on g, large pcale and tbeja people were SBddeoed by jt ho fact that a war was the cause. The [ reunion of the local and Imperii) forces )in a time of peace on fcuch historic 'ground as Taranaki should ba agteat i source of pleasure to everyone now in I the district where so much b'ood was • shed. Properly organised, with special j trails a't e£cnrfipn ratea, the question I of finance shpuld give vary Jittle trpuble I and there should be no difficulty In getting a number of gentlemen to guarantee what is required to enable the Imperial trcops to be entertained in a manner worthy of Taranaki and due to such interesting guests. We trust there will be a large attendance at tonight's meeting and the project heartily supported.
