When His Worship tlie Mayor (Mr. E. Dockrill) formally opened the courts there wore about eighty person? | preSfeuts, a large proportion beinp ladi"s. In formally opening the newground, His Worship cw.gratuWed the members on the action they had taken in acquiring the freehold of tho property, and predicted a prosperous and successful futuro of the Club. That a second club wai needod, he said, was evidenced by the fact tint the New Plymouth Club w:>s air"ady wis crowded that ue-v members had to be refused. He warmly praised the ladios for the sumptuous o>n let provided, atid accorded an equal measure of praise to the gentleman for their successful i-ff jrts in getting the ground into order. He concluded by expressing an opinion that in the near future the club would be abl* to hold its own against any other club in the colony, a prediction tha r caused con siderable amusement. The Rev. Jas. Ings also addres-ed a few remarks t.o those presen", after which a endi d vote of thanks was passed :o the Major for his attendance. During the afternoon a scratch match was played, Mr. Gaukroger's team scoring 17 gunes as against Mr. Sykes' 14. PI .y was continued briskly >y vario :s uo till dusk. Owing to the heat tf the weather, the ladies in c.hargo of the re freshaients had an exceedingly busy time, but as ample provision had beuu made (hey had no difficulty iu supplying tho large demand on their resouiees. I'hey are to b> congratulated on the complete success of their efforts, which were thoroughly appreciated. The Club have mule a most auspicious start, and there is little doubt but that its career will b.i lasting and prosper 1 ous.
