The Daily News. FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 1901. SHIPPING FACILITIES.
Some correspondence has appeared j n 1 our columns fa; tU steamer fares to Auckland, a further letter ' appears in this issue, in which the writer says, judging by the foob note to his farmer letter, tt\ o people have little te expect from us and in common with others the Daily News is inclined to side with the fat man or big monoplies as against the people and their rights, it is hardly necessary for us to say that wo hold no brief for juny fat man. We are opposed Jo monopolies and prepared to maintain fcfeo rights of the people wher e those rights are baised on truth antj justice. As far as the Union S.B. Company is concerned wo are not aware of their having any monopoly in the case referred to as the Northern B.S. Company also runs a boat, and there is nothing to prevent any other company or individual from putting one or more steamers on the service. When, however, our corres-
pondent expresses the Opinion that additional steamers are required he is on sound ground. Although we contend that the Union Company i K entitled to every for the enterprise they ha'y shown in tha fast, and the Northern Company too for the matter of that, we some time ago[urged that one additional steamer at least should be put on between New Plymouth and Onehunga 'lhe figures supplied to us by : the Collector of Customs, published in a later issue shoy how largely the trade of tho town and district is increasing. The Minister of Railways recognises the need of a daily service between Auckland and Wellington, and has offered to put ou a daily mail train as soon as the Shipping Companies will put on steamers to
conneot. Unfortunately there is difference of opinion amongst some of our leading business men, some favouring a faster train service rather tban aiore train?. A careful study of the whole question has satisfied as that daily communication with Auckland oh the one hand f.nd Wellington
on.tne otner win prove more generally beneiic&l than faster trains four days a -week, When the papulation becomes more dei.se a faster service will doubtless I- ;' tooded and provided. Now ■that. nt> much attention is being paid to the tourist traffic, tile importance of our haviiig daily I'ommuDicotion with the lar;;(jr etntrcr of peculation cannot be emj»bawctsd too strongly or two oftcii. aa'ieistand the local aganii of >'fco Union Company, a gentleman who id kaejaly alive to the W«t of hi., c;.';,-pr.ny, and anxious to cooi'urt of the travelling brought the necesstrainer under the Tlio
ii'jiw pjiiplo at biglewood, yirotfui f.y ~i:d Eltham would ">o hearlily c,oupstate, as they have Song agitated for a daily train to Wellington. The Mnrbnur Board would also benefit by the increased trade cisat would pass ovor tbe wharf.
