THE CENTRAL SCHOOL.

EXHIBITION OF WORE. There was an admirable exhibition of work at the Osntral School on Wednesday afternoon, and the desk* were most tastefully decorated with flowers, the tsste shown by eeme of the girls being beyond all praise. The attendance of the public was exceedingly disappointing, while the School Committee, with the exception of the Chairman. Mr. W. A, Oollis, were censpioious by their absence. This is to be regretted, because nothing is a greater encouragement to both teachers and scholars than to fesl that committee and parents are taking a keen and active interest in the progress and welfare of the school. During the afternoon a considerable portion of the children assembled in the west wing and under the able conductorship of Mr. Gray, one of the assistant masters, sang solos, duets, and choruses in a way that reflected very great credit on the school. The exhibition of mapping, drawing, writing, etc., was also an excellent one, and the work of the examiners must have been a very arduous one indeed, and their decision was very keenly I criticised by the visitors. We regret not having space for a detailed description of the exhibits, but one very gratifying feature was the originality shown in the opon classes proving in a rory marked manner that the children are being taught to think for themselves—the end and aim of all education, Whero all did so well it would bs unfair to particularise but the work of Young, Neal, and Skinner, amongst the boys, of Lilly Freethy, Lilly Brooks, Nora Dempsoy, Flora Rots, and Pearl i Bullock, nmongat the girls, deserves spocial mention, The following is the prize list:— Standard VI.
