CHARGE AGAINST A POLICE SERGENNT.

Sergeant Mackay in charge of the polioo here has been suspended and an enquiry oommenced baforo the Stipendiary Magistrate this evening, the sergeant being charged with drinking. Inspector McDonnell said the charge was the outcome of an anonymous lettor received by him relative to the charges. It was Mackay's wish the charges should be investigated- Be would be. pleased if there proved to be nothing in the charges. Tho only witness oxamined was a recontly dismissed constable who siid he saw Mackay reel when lie got out of a trap but could not say whether he was carrying 6ome aeliclos in his arms at the time.
