Now that road-making and mending it occupying the attention it deserves, every device of practical utility it an aid to pro- j grass. Messrs. Marshall fc Sons, of Gainsborough, England, have placed on the market a mechanical scarifier, which can be attached to a traction engine or steam roller, and works either backwards or forwards and on a traversing motion, whereby any part of the road, from gutter to crown, can be cut up to an even depth. The chisels can easily be withdrawn for sharpening or replacement. By means of this scarifier the necessity of re-metalling is frequently avoided. The s.s. The attendance at the Lili Sharp-Rafalew-ski concert last night was very disappointing considering the exceptional merit oJ the entertainment.
