THE PENNY POSTAGE STAMP.
'The universal penny postage stump which is to be brought into use in New Zealand ou January Ist was designod and printed by Messrs. Waterloo and Sons. The stamp is carmine, the colour selected by the Postal Union for all penny stamps. On the shore stands New Zealand, a tall and graceful female figure, clad in classic flowing robes, her hair streaming in the fresh breeae that is blowing over the Southern seas over which she is gazing. In the back ground, faintly outlined, is seen Mount Egmont's snowy tapoiing peak. With her right hand New Zealand points across the sea, on which a steamer is conveying her tidings of good will to all the nations of the earth. Her left hand, pointing earthwaids, grasps a caduceus, Mercury's winged rod enI twined by two serpents, the symbol of [swift communication and commerce. Thus is indica'ed the despatch of her mails by land and sen. The globe behind her typifies the world wide extent of her correspondence In a ribbon above are the words " New Zeal-tnd," in otic below "Universal Postage." The value " one penny," appears in a broad band at the foot. The stamp is bordered by : ornamental scrolls, while each top corner is occupied by a circle enclosing : a six-pointed star.
