LIBEL BY TELEGRAM.
AN IMPORTANT POINT OF LAW. |PHB PBHSS ASSOCIATION^ Wellington, November 30. An action was heard bj the Okief Justice, this morning, in which Geo>e;e H. M. Hewson, a blind man carying on a Labour Agency, sued Thomas Shute, of Taihape, for £3OO damages for alleged libel contained in a telegram, as follows:—"Unless money is returned immediately will sue for obtaining money under false pretences." Defendant pleaded that the telegram, which he believed was sent by his wife, was forwarded without his knowledge or consent. As the parties had agreed that if the telegram was found to be defamatory the damages should be £2, with XlO costs, His Honour reserved his decision to consider an important bearing of the case upon the question of telegraphed communications.
